The Sydney Japanese Language Exchange Group meets every Tuesday at the New Windsor Hotel 48 Park St (Bar/Pub cnr of Park and Castlereagh Sts) Sydney from 7.30pm to 12.00am. We chat about anything and everything. So come along, buy a beer, join the group and practice your English and Japanese!

We meet around the round tables on the ground level, inside near the windows.

History and people

James. Spoken Japanese level: Beginner
The group began in 2004. It originally existed as a Meetup group without a leader. James Hogan stepped in as he wanted to learn some Japanese and understand Japanese culture before going to Japan in 2006. In February 2004 he started running a monthly Japanese language exchange group at cafes in Circular Quay. An afternoon cafe meeting did not attract that many people so James moved the group to Shark Bar on Liverpool Street. Meetings at Shark Bar attracted 10-15 people interested in Japanese language and culture. The group also attracted members from the Salsa dance group upstairs. Enough to have a chat but not really enough to have an atmosphere. Also, large lounges meant it was difficult to hear people above the noise and there wasn't much space to have a meeting.

At the time the meetings were run on Wednesdays and it was necessary for James to turn up an hour early just to rearrange the tables and chairs and reserve a place for the group.

In an effort to attract more people, and reduce organising time, in 2006 James moved the meetings to Star Bar on a Tuesday night. This increased numbers to 20-25 with one meeting attracting 35 people thanks to future organiser Steve. Star Bar had its own problems with limited seating so it was necessary to turn up early to grab a place, usually the lounges in the centre. James had to find someone to take over the group while he went to Japan so Steve stepped in.

Steve. Spoken Japanese Level: Intermediate
Steve ran the group during the middle of 2006 before handing it back to James when he returned. Thankfully for Steve, not much organising was required as the winter months usually reduced numbers to no more than 5! When James took the group back he had just started Adult English School and was not able to put in as much effort as he would have liked to keep the group running. Thankfully James Martin stepped in.

James. Spoken Japanese Level: Intermediate
James Martin ran the group from 2007 to 2009. Affectionately known as 'Big James' James made some big changes to the group which dramatically increased numbers. On his first day as leader he organised a $500 tab at the bar which resulted in about 50 people turning up to the meeting. The numbers increased across 2007 in Star Bar but it was obvious to Big James that a new venue was necessary. The New Windsor Hotel was decided on as the perfect setting and the meetings were moved there in 2007. In 2008 meetings went weekly, and combined with Kayoubibar - a group formed from students from James Hogan's Adult English School - meant that attendees regularly topped 60 in the summer months.

James Hogan's school is just around the corner from the New Windsor Hotel so he is usually able to attend when Big James cannot. This meant there was at least one recognisable face there for people to find! Unfortunately, Big James' new job in 2009 meant that he was not able to attend as many meetings as he would have liked so, another organiser had to be found. Thankfully, Ken stepped in.

Welcome Ken. The new organiser as of July 2009.

Ken. Spoken Japanese Level: Native!!
Ken Mikuny has been a regular for many years and is willing and ready to take the Japanese English Language Exchange Group to the next level. Please congratulate Ken on his new position when you see him.
